Bought a 6x4 SixWheeler!

Why did i end up buying a SixWheeler?

Well.. the fact of the matter was really going through GCM, GVM, Payload and Axle Weights on the old LandCruiser. It simply was too hard to manage all the time to be within legal limits. Always being borderline was becoming annoying and really, the only way to do it proper was to go down a path that had enough to not really have to think about it. Legalities and safety was really what is was all about.

What type of SixWheeler did i buy?

Plenty to consider but in the end we opted to stick with the LandCruiser 79 series. Just by chance, I came across a posting on the for sale page at SixWheeler Conversions and peaked my interest. I would really have liked to have a proper 6x6 and there were a couple around but they were simply too expensive. Not sure if this link is still active, but that is the cruiser that we ended up buying. By chance it was over in Ocean Grove so jumped on the ferry to have a quick peek and the deal was done pretty quick.

Why not a 6x6?

Would have loved to have one but it came down to being at least A$100,000 more expensive or have to build one from scratch. If I were to start again today, I would likely have done a Multidrive 6x6 conversion.

What are the figures?

  • 5495kg GVM
  • 9000kv GCM

.. which means I can actually tow our 3500kg rates Trakmaster caravan even when the cruiser is fully loaded! Epic!

Did a check start of October 2025 on the weighs going through Bairnsdale and Gippsland as there are a few public weighbridges there. The numbers were:

Car only:

  • Whole car 3940kg
  • Front axle 1460kg
  • Rear axle 2480kg

Car + Caravan (coming back from winter camp.. so not fully loaded…):

  • Whole car 4290kg
  • Front axle 1210kg
  • Rear axle 3070kg
  • Caravan 2700kg

How does it tow?

Exceptionally well. Well, the engine does not have a tune so that will have to be done. It is a bit sluggish but will at some point get a new snorkel, airbox and remap… and that will bring it to life proper. Been in contact with Just Autos who works through a distributor in Melbourne. At least that is the plan as it stands now.
